How to Get That Natural Eye Makeup Look

Getting a natural eye makeup look is one of the most envied accomplishments in the world of makeup. While bold eyeshadow, the smoky eye look, and bright colors all hold a special place in our hearts, beauty trends today are even more appreciative of enhancing one’s own natural beauty and simple eye makeup routines.

But how can you get that natural eye makeup look that everyone seems to want? The secret lies in simplicity. Here at Journ, we’re passionate about simplifying beauty routines everywhere. We know you don’t have all day to spend on your skincare routine or beauty routine.

That’s why we do what we do. Here are our secrets to getting that natural eye makeup look you’ve always wanted with maximum ease.

Natural Eye Makeup Looks

When deciding what kind of natural eye makeup look you want, it’s important to factor in your style, eye shape and your skin tone. If you tend to go with neutral colors like taupe, light pinks, or tans, you want a natural eye makeup look that will match this.

When perfecting the natural eye makeup look, one of the best products to use is one that color corrects. These products function similarly to primers and concealers as they work to neutralize color concerns and address skin concerns.

However, the benefits of using color correcting products instead of concealers are that as only a small amount is needed, they eliminate caking, creasing. They also don’t look textured on skin, resulting in a smooth, flawless look with minimal effort.

Whether you use lots of makeup or don’t use any at all, our color correction skin care can help enhance the natural beauty you already possess. Color correcting creates the perfect canvas for eye makeup application.

Medium to Deep Skin Tones: Use Marrakech Color Corrector

When using color correcting products, it’s important that your makeup matches your skin tone and addresses your specific color-correcting concerns. For a natural and flawless eye makeup look on medium to deep skin tones, turn to our Marrakech color corrector.

Marrakech is inspired by the rich sights, deep colors, and vibrant sounds of a spice market in Marrakech. It’s the perfect starting point for a simple, natural makeup look.

If you have a medium to deep skin tone, our Marrakech color correcting product will help neutralize unwanted colors, minimize the appearance of dark circles and lids, spots, acne, and hyperpigmentation when used over time.

How to Use

Start with a clean, moisturized surface. Use a cleanser and moisturizer that are gentle on the skin.

Next, apply an apple-seed amount of the product on the back of your hand and warm it with your finger. Pat on any area around your eyes that you want to minimize dark circles, unwanted spots, or hyperpigmentation. You can also use a beauty blender or concealer brush. If any imperfections are still peaking through, you can apply more layers with the same process.

Light to Medium Skin Tones: Use Kauai Color Corrector

If you have a light to medium skin tone, you can use our Kauai color corrector instead!

Kauai is inspired by the sand between your toes when you take a beach trip and watch the sunset. If you’re ready to feel confident with a natural eye makeup look and have a light to medium skin tone, this product is for you.

It works by neutralizing hyperpigmentation and color correcting the appearance of skin so you can get the same effect as concealer without the cakey, creased, textured look.

Kauai also addresses the underlying problem as well as corrects color in the moment to help minimize the appearance of dark circles, spots, blemish scars, and hyperpigmentation over time. Thanks to ingredients like Kukui Nut and Noni, you’ll be treating your skin while taking care of your immediate concerns.

Neutral Shadow

If you want to stop with a color-correcting product, you can. Finish the skin with a thin layer of foundation and it will give you a smoothed-out, natural look and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation without cakey concealer or too much foundation.

However, if you want to use eyeshadow to add some color or emphasize your peepers, there are a few factors to keep in mind. First, you want to choose neutral colors based on your skin tone. Let’s break it down below.

For Warm Skin Tones

If you have a warmer skin tone, your skin will look best with a certain range of colors. If you aren’t sure what kind of skin tone you have, here are a few identifiers. With warmer skin tones, you probably tan more easily than you burn and look best wearing gold jewelry than silver jewelry. Your veins are also likely more green than blue.

If you do have a warm skin tone, here are a few colors that will compliment your skin tone the best. Earth-toned eyeshadow is probably the direction to go. Terracotta, orangey-browns, and olive greens look good with warm skin tones. For the most natural-looking eye makeup, go for light shades of these colors and blend in minimal amounts in your crease.

For Cool Skin Tones

If you have cool skin tones, you’ll have the opposite characteristics as warm tones. You’ll probably burn much more easily than you tan, look better with silver jewelry than with gold jewelry, and have blue or purple veins.

If you do have cool-toned skin, you may want to use cooler taupe, as well as pinky-nudes that will bring out the peachy notes in your skin.

Applying Natural Eyeshadow

If you’re planning on applying shadow, you’re going to need a few tools—a big, fluffy eye brush, a slightly smaller blending brush, and a flat packing brush, if you’re planning to use a shimmer. We like Sigma and Morphe for brushes.

Start by sweeping a light, neutral brown tone through your crease and buffing it out well. This color should only be a shade or two darker than your skin tone. Then, go in with a slightly darker shade, also a neutral, and concentrate the color more towards the center of your crease and the outer corner of your eye. Blend well.

You can stop here, or you can take that flat packing brush and press a light shimmer all along your lid, making sure that you don’t go any higher than your crease. If you want a slightly more subtle shimmer, focus the product only on the center of your lid and the inner corner of your eye.

Decide Whether You Want Liner

If you’re going for a natural eye look, there’s absolutely no rule saying that you need to wear eyeliner. That said, if you want to add a little more emphasis to your gorgeous eyes, we can help.

First, you can try creating a soft liner look using just your eyeshadow. By using a thin pencil brush and blending your deepest brown shade on your lash line towards your outer corner, you’ll get the illusion of a slightly messy, smoked-out liner. You can even extend this slightly beyond the corner of your eye for a slight wing.

A natural eye look would also greatly benefit from the use of a soft pencil liner in brown or grey. While liquid liner wing certainly has its time and place, right now, we’re going for a more understated look. Gently smooth your liner along your top lash line, blending out as you go for a softer look. You could even choose to start the line at your pupil and move out, rather than following your entire lash line.

Light Mascara

To top off your makeup look, you can use a light layer of mascara on your lashes. To look even more natural, you can opt to use a mascara that matches your lashes, like brown or black, or even go with clear. This will top off your eye makeup look and enhance your natural beauty. We like the Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara, as well as the Lengthening & Volumizing Mascara from Charlotte Tilbury.

Start the wand by the roots of your lashes, and wiggle it gently while sweeping the wand towards the ends of your lashes. This action will allow you to get a bit more volume and length without having to add another coat of mascara.

If you want to keep it even more natural, you can simply curl your lashes, as well, without putting anything on top of them. This will give you that doe-eyed, wide-awake appearance without having to bother with any other products.
