Under-Eye Color Correctors That Really Work

We’ve all had one of the mornings where we need to take that extra time to give our skin and our minds love and attention. Maybe we’re stressed about work, or we’re struggling to get enough sleep at night. Either way, when we don’t care for our emotional and physical well-being, it can show on our skin in the form of paleness and dullness, breakouts, or even dark shadows below the eyes

You’re not alone. When you’re feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities of the day, it can be helpful to take a step back and treat yourself to a few moments of care and kindness. Here at Journ, we believe that the way we treat our skin can have a huge impact on our overall health and wellness. That’s why we’re dedicated to sharing clean products that are accessible to everyone, so you can begin developing a skincare routine that really works for your needs.

Here’s a quick look at how you can manage the effects of under-eye shadows and keep your skin healthy and happy for a long time to come.

What Are Under-Eye Color Correctors?

When we don’t get enough sleep or if we don’t have the chance to enjoy a healthy and complete diet throughout the day, it can present as dark shadows below the eyes. Depending on your skin tone and skin undertones, these shadows may appear in shades of purple, green, or blue and often make us look tired or worn down.

There are many benefits to taking care of our skin, and they go beyond the physical. When our skin is well-cared for and healthy, it can give us the confidence and pride we need to tackle whatever the day ahead might bring. Managing the effects of under-eye shadows can really help.

When you’re ready to get started, you’ll want to reach for an under-eye color corrector. As the name indicates, a color corrector isn’t about concealing the blemishes or dark spots on your skin. It’s about balancing shades and hues so that you can minimize their appearance and give your skin a healthy, glowing look, which can contribute to your own sense of confidence and comfort.

How to Match Under-Eye Color Correctors

It’s important to remember that different colors have different uses. When you understand what each color can be used for, you’ll have an easier time balancing discoloration and achieving that smooth, consistent tone. Here are some of the uses and benefits of different shades and colors of color-correcting makeup.

Green

Green is across from red on the color wheel, which makes it a great choice for minimizing the effects of redness on the skin. If you’re managing pre-existing skin conditions like psoriasis or rosacea, green color correctors can be used to help balance out the appearance of redness. It’s also helpful for sunburns, though you always want to be careful when applying any product to damaged skin.

When applying green color correctors, a little goes a long way. Too much green can give the skin a waxy appearance, so always check your reflection as you go.

Deep Orange

If the shadows below your eyes appear blue, which they most often do in individuals with cool undertones, you’ll want to reach for an deep orange color corrector because orange is opposite blue on the color wheel. Not only can burnt oranges be helpful for reducing the appearance of blue shadows, but it’s a good option for covering up smaller spots of discoloration as well.

Deep orange is best for those with medium to deeper skin tones

Peach

Peach is similarly effective to orange, but on individuals who have medium to light skin tones. If you have discoloration, especially circles or shadows below the eye, then a peach color corrector is a great way to reduce their appearance and achieve that smooth, healthy skin look. Peach is more effective on shadows that are brown or yellow in appearance.

How to Use an Under-Eye Color Corrector

There are a few different options when it comes to color correctors. If you’re looking for a simple and quick morning routine, you’ll want to reach for a stand-alone color corrector that doesn’t need to blend with foundation. You also have the option of color correctors that can be blended with foundation to achieve that natural look. And, like many makeup products, there is a gentle powder option to consider, as well.

If the color of your corrector matches your skin tone, you can simply apply it directly to the surface of the skin using your finger. Dab over the circle and below the rest of the eye and up to the inside of the eye, as well. This will help to provide complete and natural coverage.

If the pigment does not accurately match your skin tone or you’re using one that requires a foundation combination, it’s best to use a brush instead of your fingers. Apply only to the location on the skin where there is pigmentation, rather than around the entire underside of the eye. Assess how much of the pigment is balanced and apply more as necessary.
